With a new baby in tow, Trish sought an opportunity to live and work within her community and have the flexibility she needed to raise her newborn son –an opportunity she found at Joseph Brant Hospital. For the past 33 years, Trish has not only found the work-life balance she sought, but has also had the opportunity to fulfil her passion for professional growth and the ability to make a direct impact on patient care.

While working full-time in a busy Emergency Department, she was supported by her colleagues to complete her Masters degree, an opportunity she embraced wholeheartedly. “It was the best possible option for me and something that I was encouraged to do.”

“I see patients in consultation to provide recommendations for optimal care. While working in the Emergency Department, I saw a great need for more supportive care for our geriatric population. In my role as a Clinical Nurse Specialist in Geriatrics, I was supported by the hospital to bring the Hospital Elder Life Program (HELP) to the medicine units.” HELP is a program where volunteers provide patients with interventions to help prevent delirium and functional decline in the hospital’s geriatric patient population.

Trish’s impact on patient care extends well beyond the walls of JBH.  She plays an integral role in Canadian Nurses for Africa, a non-profit group that travels to Kenya annually on mission work. Established in 2009 within JBH’s Emergency Department, this group has expanded yearly and now consists of nurses from across Canada. Together, they travel to Kenya providing vital healthcare services and leaving an impact on all the lives they touch.
