Katie is one of Joseph Brant Hospital’s dedicated Tim Horton’s employees. What you may not know about her is that she is also a Special Olympics Athlete who has participated in Special Olympics programming for over 10 years.  She competes in a variety of different sports including, 5 pin bowling, swimming, rhythmic gymnastics, curling and bocce ball.

She began competing as it gave her the opportunity to meet new friends and stay in shape!

“I’ve been able to meet a lot of people!”

In 2016, she participated in the Provincial Games where she won five bronze medals in the Level 1-B division.

“I was supposed to go to the provincial games in 2020 for swimming and rhythmic gymnastics, but they were cancelled because of COVID-19,” said Katie.

Because of the cancellation, athletes who missed out in 2020 are being invited to the 2024 Provincial Games.

“Hopefully, I will go! I need to do well at a competition to qualify.”

The Special Olympics provides an opportunity to its athletes and participants on and off the field of play, however, this often isn’t the case in their everyday lives – many children, youth and adults who have an intellectual disability are still left out.

From February 3 to 5, Tim Hortons are selling the Special Olympics Donut with 100% of proceeds donated to Special Olympics Canada.
