In partnership with Halton Diabetes and the YMCA, we are proud to bring the Burlington community the LiveWell with Diabetes program - a new exercise and education program for people with Type 2 diabetes and for people at risk for developing the chronic disease.
The YMCA provides the program's kinesiologist and specially-trained staff while Joseph Brant Hospital and Halton Healthcare Services provide clinical expertise including a diabetes nurse educator and a registered dietitian. Hamilton Health Sciences helped develop LiveWell programs and provides ongoing support while McMaster University is involved with development and evaluation.
People can join group exercise programs at the Ron Edwards Family YMCA (with a YMCA membership) and educational sessions (free) from health professionals from the Halton Diabetes Program.
Wednesdays from 10:30 am to 11 am and Fridays 8:30 am to 10 am at the Ron Edwards Family YMCA.
The first and third Thursday of every month from 9 am-12 pm.
The Living Well and Eating Well education sessions are delivered by health professionals from the Halton Diabetes Program and are free to the community.
To register, call the Ron Edwards Family YMCA membership desk at 905-632-5000. Participants will be booked for an individual assessment before starting the program. Participants can self-refer, though a doctor's note is required to ensure they are safe to exercise. Registration is ongoing.
